Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are working a shooting that occurred Saturday evening at the Howe Community Park area just as deputies were dissolving an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.
What Led to the Shooting
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first called to the Arden-Arcade park shortly before 6:30 Saturday evening after learning of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. After that, a second caller reported describing a potential altercation unfolding inside the park.
Air support searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Nevertheless, it was apparent that a massive group had come together at the location without permission.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Deputies worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and using their vehicle PA systems directing the assembled crowd to go home. Roughly 15 minutes were allotted for attendees to disperse.
It was during this dispersal that between 20 and 25 rounds rang out. The barrage of gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Law enforcement quickly moved to identifying shooting victims.
Those Who Were Hit
In total, four people were discovered with shooting injuries. Those injured — consisting of one woman and three men each reported to be in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to Sacramento area hospitals. Emergency physicians noted that two had critical injury classifications, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Thankfully, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento fire crews provided support and assisted with medical triage those who had been shot on location.
What Investigators Found
The main crime scene appears to have happened near Cottage Way close to the Home Depot store at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Law enforcement investigators located extra shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Bullet holes were discovered in the metal fencing alongside the Home Depot store. These discoveries suggested that at least one of the shooters had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot building and parking lot. The nearby Home Depot was locked down as a precaution. CSI units alongside detectives worked tirelessly for hours.
Suspects Detained
Intelligence received over police scanner frequencies confirmed that a Kia was pulled over in Solano County. Four people were detained. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for check here investigation. Video reviewed at the scene confirmed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
